Viking Cruises announced they will be joining expedition cruise market, with two planned ships designed for the Great Lakes along with polar cruising.

Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking Cruises calls the concept “the thinking person’s” expedition line. Viking is a dominant force in European river cruising and has expanded rapidly in ocean cruising. Now it wants to develop ice-rated vessels for polar cruises.

The first two vessels, Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris, will both launch in 2022. Their dimensions are specifically set to fit all the locks and canals in the St. Lawrence Seaway. Itineraries will also include Canada/New England, summer in the Arctic and winter in Antarctic.
