Princess Cruises is looking ahead while honoring the past with Sun Princess, the first ship in a new Sphere Class, which will be the largest the line has ever built.
The name goes back to the first Sun Princess– where The Love Boat TV show was filmed –that sailed from 1974 to 1988. A second Sun Princess sailed from 1995 until 2020.
The Sphere name comes from the rounded feel of its three-deck Piazza atrium and an innovative geodesic dome that crowns the ship. The Dome is a multi-level glass enclosed deck with indoor-outdoor pool and water features. At night, the pool will become a stage with a South Beach vibe the ability to host aerial performances.
Carrying 4,000 guests, The 21-deck ship under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy will carry 4,000 guests when it debuts in 2024. Princess says the Sun will have brighter and lighter décor and finishes than its other ships and a more airy feel with multi-story dining rooms. The coordinating architects for the Sphere-class ships are Tillberg Design of Sweden.
The ship will have 2,157 staterooms, including 50 suites and 100 connecting rooms. The line promises the ship will have many large balcony rooms featuring in-room sofas.
The Sun will introduce a new grade of suite accommodations called the Signature Collection. Guests staying in them will have access to an exclusive restaurant, lounge and sun deck. Club Class accommodations on the Sun and the rest of the fleet will be renamed the Reserve Collection.
The ship is also designed by be eco-friendly and is one of 11 new ships in the Carnival Corp. fleets to be fueled mainly by liquefied natural gas.
The Sun Princess will sail its inaugural spring and summer season in the Mediterranean. The ship will then sail Caribbean voyages out of Fort Lauderdale in the fall of 2024. A sister ship is due in 2025.
