Luxury expedition line Ponant has eliminated the use of heavy fuel oil as of January, 2019, and replaced it with Low Sulphur Marine Gas Oil across its entire fleet – nearly a year before required by law.
LS MGO is refined from crude oil to reduce pollutants, notably sulphur and fine particulate matter. In 2020, maritime law will require all ships to use fuels with a maximum sulphur content of 0.5 per cent.
Ponant has not only implemented the standard a year ahead of time, but is exceeding the requirements by using a fuel with a maximum sulphur content of 0.1 per cent, the company notes.
