The Birth of an Innovative Icon of the Seas

Royal Caribbean International marked the start of construction on its first of an Icon Class of ships with a steel-cutting ceremony at Finnish shipyard Meyer Turku. As you might imagine, when the ship’s name was revealed, it’s Icon of the Seas.

In keeping with Royal Caribbean’s tradition of rolling back the curtain slowly, no images of the ship were displayed; only the word ICON against a colorful puff of smoke.

Debuting in fall of 2023, Icon will be the cruise line’s first of three ships to be powered by clean-burning liquefied natural gas. The ship will also have the ability to plug into local power at ports to reduce carbon emissions. Again, more details about Icon’s advanced environmental technologies will be revealed at a future date, the company says. Stay posted because it’s a game changer..
